Daddy's Bench is a passion project that started maybe within the first year after losing Ric.
I was looking for books on the topic of grief and loss and losing a dad to read to little J and I just couldn't find anything. So I decided, why not write my own! I wanted it to be something that came from my personal experience, and something that I did quite early on was to build a little bench in the garden for Ric - a memorial bench. I added sunflower lights because those were his favourite flower, a little red robin statue because "When a robin appears a loved one is near" and a lantern with his picture in it. All of these things appear in the book and we follow "Jay", Nessie and Mommy on their journey of building the bench to remember Daddy.
I'm really happy with how it turned out and I love the illustrations. I know it's quite a niche topic for a children's book, but it really did feel to me like something was missing from the shelves when I was looking for books on the topic for J. I'm sadly very sure that he's not the only child who's lost a parent to cancer, so I hope that this book will be a source of comfort for other families too.
